01 Twist and shout [(?) with Southside Johnny]

Notes:
Unannounced and unadvertised Springsteen makes his first known stage appearance at this now-legendary club (it had opened in February 1974), as a guest of THE BLACKBERRY BOOZE BAND (headed by Steve Van Zandt and Southside Johnny). Garry Tallent and former E Street drummer Vini Lopez are also in attendance and join Bruce on stage for a lengthy late night jam. A couple of months after this show THE BLACKBERRY BOOZE BAND would morph into SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES.

Notes:
Two 90-minute rehearsal shows, with a new look Springsteen & The E Street Band the sole act on the bill. The late show did not starting until 12:15 AM, consequently it is sometimes seen on timeline lists as the following day. These were the debut public performances for Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan as E Street Band members Violinist Suki Lahav would begin guest appearances with the band on 04/10/74, however Suki (then-wife of 914 Sound Studios engineering manager Louis Lahav) was never considered an official member of the E Street Band).

Notes:
ONE show, 7:30PM, with Bruce & The E Street Band the sole act on the bill. As was the case the previous night at The Main Point, this was a last-minute addition to the tour itinerary. The reason for the early starting time was that there was a separate admission midnight show (not featuring Springsteen) headlined by ex-MOVE guitarist Roy Wood.

Notes:
ONE outdoor show, double bill, with Springsteen & The E Street Band headlining and folk stylist JAE MASON opening. This was Bruce's first engagement here since the Dr Zoom gig of 15/05/71, back when the school was known as Newark State College. Bruce and The E Street Band headline. Photos can be seen in the 1989 edition of Charles Cross's book (pg. 59).
Thanks to Ethan for the detailed setlist! A lucky attendee shares what he remembers:
I was at this concert, being a student at Kean at the time. They were the entertainment for the All College Picnic celebrating the start of the semester. The event was free, I remember they played all afternoon into the evening and barely took a break. The music was extremely loud, Bruce was all over the outdoor stage platform, playing and singing his heart out. I remember thinking what incredible energy he had and that is coming from me, then a 19 year old - we had unlimited energy at that time, so for that to get my attention, it must have really been something. I don't remember any of the songs however, since it was all new music and not covers.
Thanks to Lisa
