Current evidence suggests this is the likely starting date for what would turn out to be a two-month residency for THE CASTILES at this famous Greenwich Village haunt. The Castiles performed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons (1PM to 6 PM) when the club was transformed into a “teens only” discothèque (no alcohol served). Evening “adult” shows (where alcohol was served) usually featured established artists with record contracts. However surviving (but undated) promotional material indicates that at some point during this 2-month residency The Castiles were given the opportunity to play a couple of evening slots at the club, likely on a Monday or Tuesday when no “name” artists were normally booked.
Much of the longstanding mystery surrounding Springsteen’s performances at Café Wha stems from the fact that the club appears not to have advertised bands that played during afternoon events. A typical afternoon show consisted three “unsigned” bands performing in an alternating sets structure. Two of the groups that performed regularly alongside The Castiles at Café Wha were suburban New York garage bands WATERTOWER WEST and KANGAROO (featuring John Hall, of later ORLEANS fame). In a late 1970’s interview manager Tex Vinyard stated a recollection that THE CASTILES ended up playing a total of 29 shows at the club.
